Movie Mania Continues

Weekend Recap
Saturday: Cold Weather Weekend Warrior
Sunday: Not Such a Warrior

Happy Monday. I can’t believe it’s here already. My weekend didn’t fly by as fast as usual, but they are always too short to begin with anyway. I can’t believe it’s already mid-December!

As I mentioned, on Sunday morning I was supposed to go for a fun run with some local bloggers, but I wasn’t feeling great and didn’t want to chance making it worse. So I went back to bed and slept until about 9:30. Then I got up and had a breakfast of oatmeal with apples, pumpkin butter and cinnamon with a side of orange juice and cold medicine. Lovely.

After breakfast I popped out to the store and picked up some ingredients to make sugar cookies. I’ll be bringing these to our holiday potluck on the 21st, but I wanted to make them now and freeze them until the night before. I used my mom’s recipe:

Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup butter   (softened)
1/4 cup Crisco – regular or butter flavor (softened)
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix together Crisco, butter, sugar and vanilla.  Add egg, beat till light and fluffy.  Add dry ingredients and blend into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half, wrap in glad wrap and chill for 1 hour.

On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch thickness, cut in desired shapes and bake on cookie sheet at 375 for approx. 6 to 8 minutes.  Cool slightly and remove.  Cool completely before frosting.

For frosting the cookies: confectioners sugar, a pinch of salt and milk.

I was so busy baking that I didn’t really stop for lunch. So when the baking was done, this was my “lunch.”

Dinner was much better than lunch. I was craving soup, so I tried Amy’s Tuscan Bean and Rice soup and it might just be my new favorite. It was so yummy. I also had a side salad with romaine lettuce, grape tomatoes, goat cheese and walnuts with balsamic drizzled over it.

Finally, I needed something sweet to end my night, but I also wanted something that might help thwart an impending cold. I had half a grapefruit with one packet of Truvia sprinkled over it.

The best part of my Sunday was when Bill arrived home earlier than expected and we decided to watch another movie together. We’ve sort of been on a movie kick lately. I think we’re subconsciously trying to get the most out of our Netflix subscription.

Last night we ended up watching “Notorious.” I know what you’re thinking – it must have been awful. But actually, I was somewhat surprised with how decent this movie was. It was a solid 2 hours, but it didn’t feel like it was dragging and it never became too much about rap. I mean, it definitely was about rap, but I was never overwhelmed. I thought the actor who played Biggie was absolutely great and the little boy who played the child biggie was really good as well. Come to find out, he’s actually Biggie’s son! The resemblance was uncanny.

Anyway – I wouldn’t rank “Notorious” as a favorite by any means, but it certainly was a decent, different kind of movie. If you’re looking for something to mix up your movie line-up a bit, I would recommend it.

My final comment: the guy who played Puffy looked nothing like the real Puffy. For the first few minutes he was in the movie I kept telling Bill there was no way that this “Puffy” character they were talking about was supposed to be Sean Combs.  The casting on that one was way off.

Have a good Monday everyone!

Cold Weather Weekend Warrior

Happy Saturday! I’m going to try to make this a quick post because I have laundry to do and possibly some cookies to make. I was up early this morning to meet Katherine for a 7:30 a.m. run in Central Park. I’m a baby when it comes to running in the cold weather and usually find an excuse not to go when the thermometer dips below 30 degrees. Well, this morning I knew I had no choice since I was meeting someone. This was my outfit for the weather, but then at the last minute I threw on another long sleeve shirt instead of a short sleeve, so this isn’t 100% accurate.

Before I headed out I ate a granola bar and some triscuits with peanut butter.

And please note the temperature when I headed out: 27 degrees (okay, almost 28)! Cold weather warrior!

I think our run went really well. It was the first time we’d run together, so finding the right pace can take some time, but I think we hit our stride soon after we entered the park. And it was certainly COLD! It was a bit shocking for me for the first few minutes, but once we were moving constantly I began to heat up. Katherine is an established winter runner, having run in Pennsylvania and Boston, so she gave me some helpful tips along the way. Thanks for the great run and tips Katherine!! Here’s what we ran:

1 mile to the park
6 mile Central Park loop
1.6 mile reservoir loop
1 mile from the park back home
Estimated total: 9.5 – 9.6 miles

What are some of your favorite cold weather running tips? My face was really cold throughout the run. Does anyone wear a face covering?

I have no clue how fast we ran any of this because I’m pretty sure I left my running watch up at my parent’s house again. Oh how I wish I had a Garmin!

That was this morning and here’s a brief recap of yesterday.

The Hubby took some pics of the Gossip Girl trailer area right outside our apartment door on Friday. I also saw them taping last night when I got home around 8 p.m., but couldn’t see any of the characters.

Do you know who Desi and Lucy are? I’m assuming they are some GG characters right?

Breakfast yesterday morning was some Kashi Heart to Heart with almond milk and blackberries.

My mid-morning snack was tea and a Larabar. I was so cold, I wanted something comforting and this was perfect!

I had to venture out in the cold to get some lunch and I didn’t feel like thinking too much, so I grabbed my usual salad: romaine lettuce, carrots, walnuts, dried cranberries, peas and cheddar cheese.

My afternoon snack was Greek yogurt with granola and the leftover clementines from yesterday.

After work, I decided to meet up with my friend for happy hour. We went to a dive bar in the West Village and I had one beer. I knew I had to get up early to run and I very rarely go out on Friday nights.

When I got home I made a quick dinner of multi-grain pasta with marinara sauce to help fuel my early-morning run.

And my dessert was my new fave again:

I think I was in bed and asleep by about 10:45 last night. I did have to get up once in the middle of the night because I heard Murphy playing with a tree ornament. I managed to find the ornament and wire hook in my sleep walk and non-contact blindness and then went right back to bed.

I’ve got another fun blogger run tomorrow morning – yay! The rest of Saturday will be some housekeeping, relaxing and maybe a movie tonight. Enjoy your weekend!

An Official New York Road Runner

Good morning blog world! It’s Tuesday – we made it through Monday – yipee! I was pretty darn tired yesterday and was still wondering if I was actually going to get sick. I woke up yesterday feeling a little bit better and hoped it was just a nasty allergy attack.

For breakfast I had 1/2 cup of oats, tsp of pumpkin butter, handful of raisins and a splash of milk.

It was really tough to get moving and get out the door on time. I had to stop and grab a coffee to help keep me sane and awake. Monday mornings at work are typically pretty busy for me, so I knew the coffee would help.

I was surprised that the day actually moved along pretty quickly. I ate my morning granola bar at 11:00 and then the one or two new projects I started to work on kept me occupied and before I realized it, it was 1:45 and I hadn’t had lunch yet!

I trudged out in the rain and got a salad from across the street. The usual stuff: romaine lettuce, peas, carrots, cheddar cheese, walnuts and craisins.

My camera was a little off, so pics are looking blurry. :-/

After lunch, I went onto the New York Road Runners site and browsed some races. I decided I wanted to sign up for two in January. And then I just bit the bullet and became a member. It’s about time I started running races in NYC and not just upstate. I typically try to run all my races with my running buddy Lauren, but as my hubby said yesterday, “she’s not always going to be able to run with you.” Sadness. So I signed up for these two races:

NYRR Fred Lebow Classic (5M)
NYRR Half-Marathon Grand Prix: Manhattan

Lauren WILL be able to run the Half Marathon with me!! YAY!! I will tackle the Fred Lebow 5 miler on my own – just call me Miss Independent. Unless my hubby surprises me and decides to run it as well. 😉

Any other NYC bloggers planning on running either of these?

I am generally NOT a winter runner, but this will be my attempt to keep running strong throughout the winter. If you’re a runner, do you still race in the cold weather?

My co-worker tells me that she actually runs better in the cold. Not me.

Later on in the afternoon yesterday I had some Greek Yogurt with granola and oats and two clemetines (gotta get that vitamin C to stay healthy!).

BTW – today at noon you can sign-up for the NYC Half Marathon Lottery .  Can you tell that I have racing on the brain after my Turkey Trot? It’s an addiction.

I didn’t work out last night after work for a few reasons: 1) I was tired, 2) I’m going away on Wednesday morning for a business trip and needed to run some preparatory errands, 3) I haven’t actually hung out with Bill in a while, 4) I was tired.

So I left work, picked up some traveling necessities and headed home. I made this quick and easy dinner:

Here is my made-up recipe for it.

Asparagus Chicken with Roasted Red Peppers

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 1/3 cup of diced onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 6-8 stems of fresh asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 1/2 (7 ounce) jar roasted red peppers, drained and chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup chopped grape tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, or to taste
  • 1/3 cup shredded parmesean cheese

Directions

  1. Heat the broth in a large skillet over medium-high heat with the garlic and onion. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, and place in the skillet. Cook 15 minutes, until chicken is almost done.
  2. Place asparagus and red peppers  in skillet. Continue cooking 10 minutes until asparagus is tender. Place tomatoes in skillet during last 2 minutes of cook time. Sprinkle with vinegar. Top with parmesean cheese and serve.

It was yummy and the husband rated it as “pretty good.”

After dinner I had a small piece of the white cake with white frosting that Bill’s sister Christine made for his birthday and brought to Thanksgiving dinner. I was shocked that Bill was willing to share his cake. But then he told me that Christine made him promise to share with me – figures! It was great.

The rest of my night was quiet and I went to bed pretty early. However, Murphy decided to try to wake me up pretty much every two hours during the night, so I’m a bit tired again today.

I’m starting to get a little nervous about traveling tomorrow. I’m one of those people who is always afraid of missing a flight or forgetting something important or losing my luggage. Generally – just not a very relaxed traveler. Hence, I start prepping 2-3 days in advance.

Are you a good traveler – what are some of your helpful tips or tricks?

I AM excited about the possibility of running while we’re training in L.A. The weather there is looking nice and warm. I could certainly use a nice West-coast run. 🙂

Last note – I want to say congrats to my friend Becky for starting her new blog: Write On!! I’m so happy she is proactively seeking new creative outlets and will be able to share her passion and wonderful insights with others. Becky is one of the people in my life that I always “talk books” with. We typically like the same books and are ALWAYS asking each what the other is reading and for recommendations. Now I can just check out her blog and see that, as well as her feedback and reviews. I’m so excited – so be sure to check it out. She’s also on my Blogroll! 🙂 Love ya Becks!

Why Blogging is the Best!

The reasons to blog and read blogs seem unending. As a fairly new blogger, I’m still discovering all the new and exciting things blogging has to offer. Undoubtedly, for me, one of the best things about blogging is that it makes me accountable for living a healthy and balanced life. I’ve become more aware of what I’m putting in my body and working harder to keep it healthy and active.

But I digress! That’s not what I wanted this post to be about at all. I encountered another reason yesterday that showed me why blogging is the best. Connections – it’s all about connections! Yesterday through the blog world, I came across another blogger living in NYC from my hometown area (Melissa), sent a fellow blogger a job link (which she applied to), discussed a potential fun run (with Dori), and felt much relieved to read that so many other runners worry about running in the dark (it’s not just me) and take necessary precautions (Caitlin – comments section).

It felt great to be so connected!

What are some interesting and inspiring ways you’ve connected with other bloggers?

Now on to my day…

Breakfast yesterday was a multi-grain English muffin with peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other with a splash of light cranberry juice.

Lunch was… can you guess? Leftovers!! I actually think this was better the second time around.

Snacks for the afternoon were Greek yogurt with oats and granola, and an afternoon apple (no pic of the apple) before the gym.

I hit the gym after work because I wanted to get in a quick speed workout before the Turkey Trot on Thursday morning. Here was my workout:

3.1 miles in 25:20
.9 mile – for a total of 4 miles in 34 minutes
85 crunches
30 alternating leg crunches

I did notice that my left foot is hurting a little bit. It’s not unbearable, just a weird pain underneath the ball of my foot. I’m hoping it’s nothing serious and that it feels better by Thursday.

Once I got home from the gym, I flew into action. I ate, showered, vacuumed, packed and tidied up. I was too exhausted to go to any great lengths with my dinner. This is what I managed to scrape together:

Amy’s Organic Lentil and Vegetable Soup, some cheddar cheese and two dill pickles – from varying jars. But then my body also told me it was craving peanut butter, so I had this for dessert:

And then it was basically time for bed. Seriously – my days are disappearing! I was able to squeeze in a few more pages of Copperfield before I passed out. I have a feeling I may be able to finish it this weekend!

I’m switching up my schedule a bit and trying to post a daily recap of the full day on the following morning. We’ll see if this works better with my schedule.

If you’re a blogger, what’s your blogging schedule (if you have one)? Do you post several times a day, once a day, once a week? What time(s) of day work best for you?

And a general question: when (time of day) do you most frequently “browse” other blogs?

I get out of work today (Wednesday) at 3:00 and am then hopping on a train upstate. I’ll be cooking with my momma tonight and running the Turkey Trot in the morning, so I’m not sure if I’ll get another post in before then. Then it’s off to Utica for Thanksgiving with the Callahans! 🙂

P.S. – I cried twice while watching The Biggest Loser last night. I just can’t help it! I also want Amanda to come back at the end and look as hot as Rebecca did. I think she can do it.

A Bloggy Dinner in the City

You know the drill – it’s Wednesday, but my Tuesday night recap comes first. After work last night, I headed to Candle Cafe on the UES to meet up with Megan and Chelsea, two other local bloggers, and Darien and Courtney – local blog readers! I’m constantly reading Megan and Chelsea’s sites for interesting recipes and running tips.

It was so nice to get together with these welcoming and interesting ladies. I really enjoyed my meal: the Ginger-Miso Stir Fry. And everyone elses’ dinner looked and smelled amazing as well. Here’s my dinner and the two other bloggies snapping away!

Aren’t we so cute?!

(This photo courtesy of Megan – thank you!)

Our convo was all over the place: food, running, blogging, reading blogs, restaurants in the city, etc. It was nice to hear everyone’s perspectives and finally meet Megan and Chelsea in person. Hopefully we can all do it again soon and maybe even plan a run in the near future!

I left our dinner party pretty full and tired. I headed home and watched the hubby pack for his trip to Utica and then headed to bed early. I can’t believe Thanksgiving is almost here… as is Bill’s Birthday!!

This morning’s breakfast was oatmeal with FlaxPlus Granola, pumpkin butter and blueberries.

Lunch was leftovers from the Sunday night (it was time to finish them up): rice and beans with onion and corn. It actually really hit the spot. I also had some Greek yogurt (honey flavor) with oats. I’ve never tried the honey flavor before (I don’t know why), but the hubby picked it up for me and so I gave it a whirl. Pretty tasty.

Snacks for the afternoon will be carrots, two clementines and probably a few chippers.

I’m hitting up the gym tonight to add some POTM miles to my list and to train for the Turkey Trot, which is not so far away! Dreaded treadmill here I come!!

To Eat Meat or Not to Eat Meat…

Happy Tuesday! But first let me recap my Monday night. I had my dinner last night at the office before heading to the book reading. Dinner was leftover rice and beans.

Event: Eating Animals Book Reading at Barnes & Noble
Last night, I went with my co-worker and one of her friends to this book reading in Union Square. I have to say, the author Jonathan Safran Foer was extremely articulate, engaging and passionate. It was one of the best readings I’ve gone to so far.

I was a little nervous that the reading/discussion would be all about the slaughterhouses and cruelty. I was relieved when Foer specifically veered away from the area. Instead, he talked a lot about how the meat industry is a very closed-off and untouchable business. He said the most disturbing thing he encountered during his research was that we buy these meat products, ingest them, give them to our children, and yet we have no idea how they are made and can’t find out if we tried.

Foer wrote to Dyson and other meat producers and asked for admittance to their factories and he never so much as received a response. It’s really scary to think that we are eating this food and we have no idea what’s in it! He talked about the fact that the meat industry actually makes more money by producing “sick” animals – animals injected with antibiotics and hormones. And then we eat these animals and everything in their bodies.

He actually really didn’t focus on the “humanitarian” ideals that lead many people to become vegetarians – not wanting to hurt/kill animals. According Foer, that’s not the question we should be asking at this point. The meat industry and its issues were more prominent focuses by far. And he brought up the thing the gets me most – how these antibiotics and chemicals are being ingested and affecting humans in so many ways: girls going through puberty at an earlier age, increase in issues with pregnancies (miscarriages), and much more.

Here are a few pics from the event (I didn’t have my Rebel with me):

I left right after the discussion and apparently missed out on seeing Natalie Portman! She was in the front row. Oh well – maybe at the next book reading I’ll run into her.

Sorry for the long recap, but this event really got me thinking. What do you think? Do you eat meat, and if so, does the lack of transparency in the meat industry scare you? Would you or have you considered going vegetarian? Do you buy local non-factory-farmed, grass-fed meat – where?

After the reading I headed home and was still a little hungry despite my earlier dinner. I snacked on some popcorn (with a little Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top) and a few raisins (no pic).

Then I headed off to read some more Copperfield before bed (I broke 500 pgs!).

Breakfast this morning was just what I was craving: a multi-grain English muffin with peanut butter and banana. Yum!

I set my alarm for 5:15 a.m. because I was going to get up and do some pilates and that never happened. I am definitely not a morning person. Bill always laughs at me when I do this, but it’s frustrating.

What are your tricks or tips for actually getting up in the morning to work out?

Lunch today was a mix: a workout cookie (I know – I didn’t workout today!) and Greek yogurt with oats.

My afternoon snack will be walnuts and raisins and carrots:

Tonight a few local bloggers are getting together for a nice little dinner at a place in my neighborhood that I’ve wanted to try. Can’t wait!

A Satisfactory Soreness

So last night after work I headed to the gym again, but this time not for a date with the dreaded treadmill. For the first time in the over two years I’ve belonged to my gym, I finally tried a class. What took me so long, right? I’d say probably fear and obstinacy. I loved taking classes (Body Pump!) at my gym back home and I was afraid and maybe even determined that no classes here would measure up.

For those of you wondering, I go to Boom Fitness on the Upper East Side. Boom is a small chain with only two locations, but I got a great deal on my membership with them when I signed up through GlobalFit (highly recommend). I think I pay about $54 a month – which in NYC is a pretty decent deal. And the gym is very nice – everything you need and very clean.

So last night I tried a class the instructor called “Power Sculpting” and the schedule called “Ripped.” Regardless of the actual name, it kicked my butt. I can’t even name all the exercises we did, but it was essentially a circuit class. We did lunges, squats, lifting, push-up, etc. each for one minute and then moved on to the next. These were some complicated moves too – not just your basic lunge. The instructor varied everything and made it into kind of a choreographed movement.

The Result: I am super sore today. I was even sore when I left the gym last night. I’m heading back to the gym tonight to try another class called “Urban Rebounding.” This class looks really fun – it’s done all on a mini trampoline!

What is your favorite class at the gym? Did you jump right into classes at your gym or did it take you a little while?

Here are some of my new-class tips:

  • Strike up a conversation with someone else in the class before it starts – ask them if they take this class a lot, do they like it, what’s their favorite part? When I did this, I found another woman who was also a newbie and felt less alone in my newness.
  • Introduce yourself to the instructor – make sure he/she knows you’re new. If the instructor doesn’t know you’re new, he/she will proceed full speed ahead and you may get lost. With newbies, instructors tend to help out and coach a little more.
  • Ask questions – ask them before, during and after the class. If you’re not sure you’re doing an exercise correctly, ask the instructor. Better that than risking injury.
  • Don’t be afraid to scale back – if you’re just learning the exercises and routine, you want to be sure you’re doing them correctly, rather than worrying about keeping speed with everyone else. Don’t rush it – learn it right or even do the modified version first.
  • Be prepared to be sore – new exercises will work different muscles than you’re used to. Expect that you will be sore the next day and feel gratified in knowing you’re challenging your body and reaching a new level of fitness.

After the gym, I came home and threw together an easy dinner. This idea actually came from my co-worker Reena. I recently bought some of Amy’s Butternut Squash Soup and Reena suggested adding some cheese to it to thicken it up and make it a sauce. That’s just what I did:

IMG_1241

I added about 1/2 cup of parmesan cheese to it and let it sit for a while to thicken. Then poured it over some multi-grain pasta. I thought it was very good. The hubby winced when I told him it was butternut squash and told me he doesn’t like squash. I said it didn’t taste “squashy” and he should try it. He did so, reluctantly, and gave it “an okay.” Baby steps.

What do you think I had for dessert?

IMG_1242

That was way too easy. The pumpkin bread is coming to an end though. It lasted us a while – thanks Mom!

The rest of the night was filled with reading (David Copperfield) and helping prep the hubby for some work-related things.

This morning’s breakfast was oatmeal with raisins, a teaspoon of agave, dollop of apple butter and flax seed. It was a yummy combo.

IMG_1243

I’m happy that last night I finally brought home and cleaned my work water bottle. It was getting a little funky and now it’s nice and clean. I use a water bottle from my old office that was a give-a-way. It is BPA-free, but I’m considering making the switch to Stainless Steel. There just seems to be too many unknowns out there about what plastic is and is not safe. So now I’m looking for recommendations!

What water bottle do you use and/or recommend?

For lunch I had some leftover pasta from last night and Greek yogurt with oats.

Picture 010

Snacks for later this afternoon will include an apple and triscuits with laughing cow original swiss flavor cheese.

Picture 011

And lastly, some great blogger news – a big congratulations to Tina from Carrots ‘N’ Cake on her book deal! Tina and I went to college together and hers is the VERY FIRST blog I ever read/followed. If you haven’t checked it out (but come on, who hasn’t?!), you should! Her blog actually inspired me to start my blog. Her success is extremely well-deserved!

I Miss Sunlight

I don’t know what I was thinking last night when I went to bed, but I set my alarm for 5:15 a.m. so I could get up and run outside. I checked the weather and it said that even at 6:00 a.m. it would be a balmy 55 degrees!

Alas, when the alarm went off, I looked at my windows and saw that it was still pitch black outside. Running along the East River in total darkness did not seem like a smart plan, so I snoozed (a lot).

So begins my frustration with the fall/winter months. It’s too dark to run outside in the morning and too dark to run outside after work. I guess I’ll be paying a visit to the dreaded treadmill tonight. Sadness.

How do you cope with seasonal barriers to running? Does anyone run during their lunch breaks? I’ve thought about that, but I doubt my co-workers would appreciate my sweatiness after. Any other creative ideas?

Breakfast today was oatmeal with almond butter, flax seed and a little agave.

Picture 003
After setting my alarm for 5:15 and snoozing until 6:15 (yes, I should have just reset it), I was pretty tired and needed a big coffee and water to revive me.

Picture 004

Lunch today is boring – leftovers from last night and yogurt.

Picture 005

When I packed my lunch this morning, I added a little Newman’s Light Balsamic dressing to this (I figured it might dry out a bit) and it definitely made it tastier.

Snacks this afternoon were an apple and the remainder of the rice chips. I can’t believe these chips lasted me a full week. I think they will be a definite re-purchase.

Picture 006

A running update…I’m trying to convince the hubby to go running with me after work. He could use a stress reliever and it’s so freaking nice outside! I’m hoping he’ll agree.

I think tonight for dinner I’ll make balsamic chicken with grape tomatoes and whatever else I can find in the fridge.

Fun Fact: Since my entrance into the blogging world, I’ve found quite a few other healthy living bloggers who reside in NYC. I’m hoping that Megan, Chelsea and I will be able to get together sometime in the near future… maybe even for a run! A mini blogger-fest of sorts!
