An Early-Morning Running Revival

I meant to write this post yesterday in the morning, but I ran out of time. Before I get into my Monday recap, here’s another look back at this past blog year from Feb-May 2010.

I took a look back at “How I got my BQ.”

It’s actually really good for me to look back at all this stuff to remember how much hard work I put into training for the Pocono Marathon. It will help me to get myself ready for this next round coming up in December.

Even though my “official training” for Boston doesn’t start until December 13, I need to get myself back into shape. So I started moving in the right direction with an early-morning run with Kelly on Monday morning. I managed to get myself to bed by about 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night. Kelly and I live about two avenues from each other, so I started heading her way around 5:30 a.m. and then we took off for Central Park from her area. Here are our stats:

Mile 1 – 9:27
Mile 2 – 8:19
Mile 3 – 8:46
Mile 4 – 8:39
Mile 5 – 9:06
.89 – 8:30

Total – 5.89 miles in 52:50. Average pace – 8:58 minute miles

The run went by really quickly and then it was time to dash around to get ready for work.

Monday was long and exhausting. I first had a pounding headache all day and then that turned into a dull headache. Plus, they are blasting the heat now and that was really getting to me. Our office is either freezing or sweltering.

When I came home last night, I ate dinner and watched some Dancing with the Stars, but then I went to bed at 9:15. I was just too tired. I hope I’m not getting sick.

But I slept great last night and woke up this morning feeling much better. I guess maybe I just needed the quality rest.  And after 8+ hours of sleep, I would hope I’m feeling better! I think I might try getting that again tonight.

One Year Blog Anniversary!

October was certainly a month of milestones for me. It seems that every year, a new anniversary pops up in October. In 2008, Hubby and I were married in upstate NY on October 18th – an unforgettable and amazing day! That anniversary certainly trumps them all.

Then on October 11, 2009, I ran my very first marathon with my friend Lauren in just under 3 hours and 55 minutes.

And then about a week and a half later, I started my blog and wrote my very first blog post on October 23, 2009! Can it really have been a year already?

So here is a brief look back at some of the highlights of my past year in the blogosphere.

First Blog Year Highlights
I started my blog and right away I had some exciting things to write about, I went to a reading/talk by John Irving in October and listened to the “Legends of the Marathon” talk about marathoning right before the NYC Marathon last year.

In November, I admitted to the blog world that I had been bitten by the marathon bug and had even started thinking about the Holy Grail – qualifying for Boston.

I also went to Jonathan Safran Foer’s Book Reading for Eating Animals and left wondering if I should become a vegetarian. More excitement came when I attended my first blogger dinner and met a bunch of great bloggers and blog readers!

And finally, I ran the Troy Turkey Trot and enjoyed Thanksgiving up at Bill’s parent’s house in Utica.

In December, I met up with a fellow runner and blogger who happened to live right around the corner for a freezing cold run. Then Hubby and I headed to Utica for the Callahan Christmas Party – with lots of food and fun! Then on Christmas, we headed to my parent’s house and I was thrilled to unwrap a GARMIN!!! Wahhoo!

I started 2010 off right with an early January road race…and froze my butt off! A little while later, I made a big decision – to run a Spring 2010 Marathon. I signed up for the Pocono Run for the Red Marathon and created a training plan! And finally, I finished up January with a great half marathon race with my friend Lauren!

Phew – that took a while to go through all that. It’s really fun to look back, but can be a bit time-consuming. So I’ll wrap up the rest of my blog year in my next two posts.

For all the other bloggers out there, how long have you been blogging? Do you enjoy looking back at all the highlights? I love it! And am so happy that I have this catalogue of my life.

Blog World Drama on a Dreary Day

YAY – we made it through Monday. Mine felt like an especially rough one. How was yours? I think this dreary weather isn’t really helping things out either.

I feel like after weekends where you really don’t get any rest, heading back to work on Monday feels especially difficult. I needed some time to ease back into the grind, but that simply was not an option.

I did manage to browse a few blogs and was reading about the Marie Claire article “The Hunger Diaries” that basically bashed six popular healthy living bloggers. I read Caitlin’s blog (Healthy Tipping Point) and Tina’s blog (Carrots N’ Cake) frequently. Tina’s blog was the first healthy living blog I discovered and played a big role in inspiring me to start my blog. She even chatted with me on the phone and gave me tips for starting a blog. I was shocked by the article. For more details and their responses, you can visit their blogs (they are also on my blogroll).

I was once a journalist, so I understand the draw of a controversial story. Journalism is a hard business to be in these days–hence my move into communications. But you can’t slant the truth in order to make a story controversial or compelling and that’s what I feel like this reporter did. Part of me also thinks she might be jealous because healthy living blogs have become so popular and possibly even put a dent in the traditional women’s magazine/health magazine readership.

Whatever her motives – she failed in her duty as a reporter, in my opinion. The article seemed totally one-sided and disproportionately negative. I wanted to comment on the Marie Claire Facebook page, but I didn’t want to have to “like” them in order to do it. I just kept thinking – wow, I would feel so awful if that article was written about me and my blog. But the blog world is so supportive that I think this will become a distant memory very soon.

If you have a blog, have you encountered negative criticism? How did you deal?

So far, I haven’t had any negative comments (knock on wood). But my blog also isn’t well-known or have very high traffic. Ahh , thank goodness for the small concessions of being less popular. 🙂

So anyway. Yesterday was busy, but it was also a rest day for me after my 12-mile run on Sunday. So I headed to my friend Katie’s house after work to have some dinner. She just moved into my neighborhood, about 15 blocks away, and I am super excited!!

We started off with some crackers, brie cheese, apple and gourmet jam.

Then Katie and her roommate Ali made some delicious spaghetti with sausage, diced tomatoes and onions.

It hit the spot!!

We relaxed, watched a bit of Dancing with the Stars and then I walked home. It’s so awesome when someone lives so close that you can walk home from their apt. And it’s so rare for that to happen in NYC.

Today is yet another dreary day. I think I’ll be heading to the gym for my run after work today. I  also hope to have a book review of Bel Canto coming you way soon! Have a great Tuesday!

Not Quite Ready to Quit

Hi all – I know, who the heck am I right? I’ve been MIA for so long, I’m sure all my readership is gone, my bloggy friends have written me off, and nobody likes me… I guess I’ll go eat worms.

So what’s the deal right? Well – things have just been crazy busy at work and at home.  The fun non-work stuff has been running the Boilermaker back in July…

But when it rains it pours and as our summer fun picked up, so did my workload. A few weeks back, my boss gave me a new big project and responsibilities which have included a lot of coordination, creativity and writing.

But, as I started writing more at work, my desire to blog before or after work started to decline. I only had so many creative juices I could squeeze – ya know?

Anyway – I know this sounds like all excuses, excuses and maybe it is, but I don’t want to quit my blog completely. I just don’t think I can do it everyday. So my promise is to try to blog as often as possible, but it may not be everyday.

READ: Since I lasted posted, I’ve read two books:

EAT: Since I last posted, my eating hasn’t been great. On top of lacking motivation and time, we encountered an issue with our gas in our apt building and it has been turned off since July 24. Guess what – our stove is gas. Our solution was that Hubby and I went out and bought a hot plate, I’ve redefined the term microwave-friendly and have discovered that you can cook many, many things in a toaster oven. I jest, but seriously this has not been fun. Our dryer in the building also runs on gas, so Hubby and I have become the newest visitors to the nearby laundry mat, someplace I had never frequented before. It wasn’t as bad as I expected, but man is it expensive!

Run: This has been worst component. Since the Boilermaker on July 12, I think I’ve run maybe twice. And last night was one of those nights. I started off my run at a brisk 7:46 minute mile and then watched as my speed steadily declined and I began hyperventilating. Anyone watching would never have believed that I ran a marathon a short 3 months ago.   I finished up at a 9:18 minute mile pace. Last weekend, Katherine texted me to see if I wanted to run either 9 or 11 miles (can’t remember which) and I literally laughed out loud as I pictured myself keeling over at the end of that run. However, this week as I watched my gut start to expand, I decided to get back in the game. Afterall, I am signed up for a Half Marathon in October. Eeek!

So alas my friends – you finally know the truth about my disappearance. I will try to regain my momentum and find the time to stay updated with the blogworld, but I’m going to beg for a little slack as I get back into the swing.

Enjoying Some “Choice Eats”

Good morning all! How is your Tuesday going so far? Mine is already busy, busy. I also have a feeling the rest of this week is going to be a little bit crazy.

But first, let me do a quick recap of my busy day yesterday. After missing my morning run, I finally dragged myself out of bed and ate some Kashi Heart to Heart Cinnamon cereal for breakfast.

My workday was very busy – I was tying up loose ends and prepping for a big training later this week. What I’m trying to say is that I forgot to take photos of my food throughout the day. I know – I’m a bad blogger. I had a granola bar as a my mid-morning snack, my regular salad for lunch and a pomegranate Chobani yogurt for an afternoon snack.

But the monotony of my daily foods was soon overshadowed by my “dinner” fun. After work I met my friend Katie and we headed to the Village Voice’s Choice Eats Tasting Event. This event featured 50+ restaurants and food from over 35 nations, including Vietnamese, Italian, Uzbekistani, Brazilian, Cambodian, Russian, Tunisian, and Cajun/Creole among many others.

Katie and I dove right in and tried so many things. Here are just a few snapshots:

This meatball, mashed potatoes and drizzle of cranberry sauce was delicious and came from Smorgas Chef.

We then had some delicious mac n’ cheese and I forgot to write down where it was from.

One of both of our absolute favorites was this mini salad with sweet glazed pork on top, along with pickled shalots and cilantro. Yum! This was from Xie Xie:

 I took this kind of cool action shot while we were walking around. This place was über crowded.

 
Despite the many, many vendors and food options, there was a clear winner in our book. We tried a whipped cheesecake with blueberry on top and it was divine. In fact, we went back to Spot Dessert Bar’s table twice! 😉

Yes, technically this was a sweet, but it was eaten for the sake of taste testing.

All in all, Katie and I had a great time. The event went until 9:30 p.m., but they began to run out of food around 8:00 p.m. At that point, we’d had our fill anyway and couldn’t eat anymore. I also sipped on three mini cups of wine…seriously mini. There were tons of beverage stations as well, but we were more focused on the food. Here we are at the end of the night:

There were definitely some way-too-crowded moments with a bit of bumping and pushing, but overall the amount of people was tolerable. I definitely think I’d hit this event up again next year.

One of the best parts about the event is their charitable partner: Slow Food NYC. “Slow Food NYC is the local chapter of a national association that is part of an international movement. Slow Food USA, with over 200 chapters in the USA, is dedicated to achieving a good, clean, and fair food system, where good means food that is real and culturally rooted, clean means food that is produced sustainably and humanely, and fair means that those who produce our food are treated fairly and that everyone has access to good, clean food. 

A portion of the Choice Eats ticket sales will be donated to Slow Food NYC. The donation will be used to maintain and expand these important Harvest Time Programs.”

Have you ever attended a tasting event like this?

This event was absolutely huge, but also a lot of fun.

I headed home in the pouring rain – not fun. I made it home by almost 9 p.m. and watched some of Dancing with the Stars and then headed to bed.

I expect a busy day today and then probably a 5-mile training run on the treadmill since the rain has continued. I’ve got a 15k race coming up this weekend which I’m pretty excited and nervous about. I won’t be racing it, but I’ll run it as a training run. I need to run 18 miles this weekend, so the 15k will be the first 9.3 miles of that long run. Fun, fun – right?

Have you ever run a race as a training run? I’ve seen a few other bloggers mention doing this (like this lady and this gal). And they are both pretty darn speedy, so maybe there’s something to the idea. I just have to focus on not running it too hard and getting caught up in the racing atmosphere or else my long run will turn into a painful run.

Brooklyn and the Blogger Hubby

Good morning all – how was your weekend? Mine was busy and good, but I feel a bit exhausted at the moment. I was supposed to go for a run this morning, but my allergies were out of control and I felt not so hot. So I bailed and will have to add that run to the end of my week.

After my long run on Saturday (yay for 17 miles!), I headed downtown to meet my friends Rachael and Stephanie at the Brooklyn Bridge. From there we walked over the bridge into Brooklyn. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally walk the Brooklyn Bridge. It was very pretty, but also very busy. It was so crowded, I didn’t even want to stop to take some pics.

When we got into Brooklyn, we headed to Rachael’s new apartment in Carroll Gardens. It was super cute and in a fun area. We went to dinner right around the corner, but I can not for the life of me remember the name of the restaurant. Rachael and I got risotto, she got seafood and I got mushroom. It was amazing. Stephanie’s pesto pasta dish looked awesome as well. Here are the two risotto dishes:

So yummy! Afterwards we hung out at Rachael’s apartment and watched a not-so-great movie: New York, I Love You. There were soo many big name actors in this movie and it was about New York, we thought for sure it would be good. It was not. I actually fell asleep about halfway through. Oops! I guess the 17 miles finally hit me.

On Sunday we woke up around 9:00, had some breakfast and then headed out. My allergies were going a bit haywire because of the doggie and they just continued to flare up all day Sunday and into the night. I told Hubby when I got home that his hopes of ever owning a dog are slim to none.  

Do you suffer from animal allergies or seasonal allergies?

My allergies to dogs are decidedly worse than to cats. Murphy is one lucky kitty cat.

While I was out exploring Brooklyn, it seems Hubby was spending some quality time in the kitchen. I came home to find these:

After a Sunday full of laundry (3 loads), vacuuming and cleaning. I was happy to not have to cook and enjoyed some of Hubby’s venison stew:

And I know I gave up sweets for lent, but that giant plate of cookies is bound to get stale, so for the sake of not wasting food I also ate a few.

I try to be helpful, you know?

I’m excited for this evening. I’m attending the Village Voice Choice Eats (thanks Megan for sharing the event info on your blog!) with my friend Katie. Then tomorrow it’s back to the grind, marathon training and hopefully 100% health. 

And congrats to all those people who ran the NYC Half Marathon on Sunday! I saw a ton of runners on my way home on Sunday morning and I was just the tiniest bit jealous (ok really jealous).  What a perfect day for it. Have a good Monday all!

Six Miles and Successful Soup

Good morning all – how is your Tuesday morning going? I set my alarm this morning to go running, but it did not happen. I was very much enjoying my sleep. So – to the gym it is tonight!

A quick recap of yesterday eats starts with a yummy oatmeal, banana and peanut butter breakfast. This has been a recent favorite – it’s really creamy and filling.

Monday morning passed along quickly and soon it was time for lunch. I had leftovers from Sunday night’s pasta dish and it was delish.

Looks a little less than delicious in the heinous light and old tupperware, but it was yummy. Afternoon snacks included Chobani yogurt with Galaxy Granola and a small snack bag of walnuts and raisins.

I bolted out of work at 5 p.m. and flew home to get ready for a nice evening run with Katherine and Bodhi. After my 15 miler on Saturday and my speedy run on Sunday, I was ready for a nice longish not-so-fast run. Here are our stats:

Total mileage: 6.04 miles in 55:23

Not too shabby! My legs were feeling mighty heavy throughout this run. We headed out at 6:00 p.m. and it got dark faster than I expected. Running with Katherine and Bodhi really makes me want a dog…but I doubt Murphy would like that and our apartment is way too small. Still – it’s nice.

Once I got back from our run, I set to work on making dinner. I bought a huge bag of baby spinach a little more than a week ago and wanted to be sure to use it up before it went bad. I decided to make my mom’s: 

Tortellini Tomato Spinach Soup

 1 Tablespoon olive oil
1/2 cup minced onion
1 clove garlic, minced
4 to 6 cups chicken broth (can also use vegetable broth)
1  14 oz. can whole tomatoes, crush them up 
1  9 oz. package fresh tortellini or dried tortellini
Salt and Pepper to taste
Dash of Parsley and Basil
6 oz. package fresh baby spinach – tear into pieces
Parmesan Cheese

Directions
In a 3 quart soup pot, heat olive oil over med. high heat and saute onion for several minutes then add garlic stirring for few minutes then add broth and tomatoes, parsley, basil, salt and pepper ;  turn heat up to high and bring to a boil – add tortellini and cook according to package instructions.  When tortellini is almost done, add spinach.   Cook few minutes till spinach is wilted.  Once you dish soup into bowls, shave parmesan cheese over the top and serve. 

Takes about 10 minutes to prep. and approx. 20 to 30 minutes to cook.

This is seriously one of the easiest soups to make and it came out great. It was delicious and filling. Thanks to Hubby for picking up the missing ingredients for me yesterday so I wouldn’t be late for my run. 🙂

The rest of my night was low-key. I did not watch The Bachelor wedding – I just couldn’t do it. I went to bed pretty early and am looking forward to doing the same tonight.

Fun and Run Sunday

Good morning all – it’s Monday again already. Whoever decided that weekends should only be two days and the work week five days was a cruel person. I think it should be reversed.

I’ll start by giving you a quick recap of Sunday, which was a busy and beautiful day. I woke up pretty late  – around 9:15 and had a light breakfast of granola with blueberries and blackberries.

I kept my breakfast light because I was attending a fun blogger lunch at noon. I met up with Lindsay around 11:45 and we walked over to Candle Cafe. I’ve eaten dinner there before, but had yet to try brunch/lunch.

I was really craving some breakfast-brunch food and was excited to see waffles on the menu. I ordered the waffles, along with a much-needed coffee. The waffles were delicious – they came with banana, apple and candied pecans on top. I gobbled them right up while enjoying some lively conversation with five other fellow bloggers. Here we are:

From the front left, that would be me, Lindsay, Katherine, Dori, Ashley and Melissa. Katherine and Melissa had just finished a run in Central Park and oh how it made me jealous. I decided I needed to squeeze a run in at some point in the afternoon. It was a lovely gathering and the conversation was wonderful – I can’t wait to do it again in the near future!

After my brunch/lunch I headed home to start the dreaded laundry. I settled on doing two loads and then squeezing in a run – the sun was beckoning me.

I finally made it out around 4:15 and headed to the promenade along the East River. My run yesterday felt good, but it didn’t feel fast and although I should have been taking this run slow as a recovery, I decided to test my speed a bit. Here are my stats:

Mile 1 – 8:04
Mile 2 – 8:08
Mile 3 – 8:23
Mile 4 – 8:03
.52 – 4:35

Total Mileage: 4.52 miles in 37.13

It wasn’t particularly easy to maintain that pace, but it did feel good to be moving faster. I’ve decided I definitely need to work more fast runs like this into my week, along with some hill-work. It’s time to get serious if I want to try to qualify.

After my run, I cleaned the apartment a bit and then made some dinner. I was inspired by this recipe from Cooking Light.com, but definitely made some changes.  

Pasta with Chicken and Spinach

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 cup)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of wheat pasta  (9-ounce) package fresh cheese tortellini (such as DiGiorno)
  • 1  tablespoon  pine nuts
  • 1  teaspoon  olive oil
  • 4 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1/8 cup of chopped onion
  • 1  (6-ounce) package fresh baby spinach
  • 1/4  cup  (1 ounce) preshredded Parmesan cheese
  • 2 Laughing Cow Light Swiss Cheese triangles
  • 1/4 cup of dry white wine
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1/4  teaspoon  black pepper
  • 1 large chicken breast 2  ounces  prosciutto, thinly sliced

Preparation

1. Cook pasta according to the package directions.

2. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add nuts to pan; cook 1 1/2 minutes or until toasted, stirring occasionally. Then add garlic and onion to pan; cook 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add spinach and chicken to pan; cook until chicken starts to brown and spinach is wilted. Add the wine and butter – cook for 2 minutes. Turn down the head and add laughing cow cheese and mix until evenly distributed.

3. Add pasta to the pan and toss with chicken and spinach mixture.

I enjoyed my meal with a glass of red wine.

It was very yummy and the Hubby said he liked it much better than some of my recent “crazy concoctions.” 🙂

After dinner, we settled in to wait for the Oscars to start. To make it a bit more interesting, I printed two ballot forms from online and gave one to Hubby to fill out and one for me. Here’s my blue ballot:

A little while later I decided I needed a snack for the start of the show. I slathered some peanut butter on a few triscuits and finished up the blackberries.

And then we watched The Academy Awards. And boy did they go on forever! For some reason, I didn’t think this year’s show was all that funny or entertaining. I just kind of kept waiting to check off my ballot boxes.

What did you think of the awards?

As I said in a previous post, I wasn’t such a huge fan of The Hurt Locker, but my instincts told me it was going to win. And indeed, I was right. I ended up winning our ballot guessing contest by only missing 7 categories as opposed to the Hubby who missed 10. He picked Avatar to win more awards and I agree with him that it should have won more, but my gut said it just wasn’t going to happen.  

By the time the awards were over it was waaay past my bedtime. Hence, I’m a tired little lady this morning, but will hopefully wake up as the day progresses. Have a great Monday all!

Friday After Five Already?!

Holy Cow – where did the day go? It’s already Friday after 5 p.m.! And my day started super early with a 5:40 a.m. run with Katherine and Liz. Here they are:

Oops and Bodhi of course! Can’t forget him – he was our guard dog for the run. Aren’t they just the cutest?

We ran from York to Central Park and then ran a little ways along the outer drive and back. There were a few other runners out as well. We ended up running about 4.5 miles – a nice start to a Friday morning. 🙂 Thanks girls!

Now for a quick recap of yesterday’s eats. Yesterday’s breakfast was Kashi Heart to Heart with blueberries.

Lunch was a salad and my afternoon snack was Chobani with more Galaxy Granola (unpictured).

My day was busy and flew by. I didn’t eat my yogurt until about 4:30 p.m. Then after work I headed to the gym to squeeze in a 5-7 mile run. I definitely ate my yogurt too close to my workout – oh the stomach pains! I managed to finish 6 miles in 51:33 – I just could not force the last mile. I’ll never do that again.

Luckily, by the time I left the gym my tummy was feeling better and just in time for a nice stomach-jarring dinner: tacos.

I packed them pretty full…

To be honest, these didn’t hurt my stomach at all. I was wary about eating tacos the night before a morning run, but they didn’t bother me in the least (thankfully for my running companions – hehe). I made myself three tacos, but was so ravenous I ate four.

And yes, I apparently still needed dessert.

Now it’s the end of the day and time to head home. I am looking forward to a quiet evening at home with the Hubby watching a movie, maybe making some pasta, and heading to bed early cuz I have a lovely 15-miler planned for the morning. Hope it goes better than last weekend. 😦
